‘Burg earns sweep at Oak Hill

Wheelersburg had little problems with host Oak Hill Thursday in a three-set SOC II sweep.

Josie Silvey led the Pirates with 12 points while Sydney Holden had 10 blocks and Marley Hanzel finished with nine kills. Wheelersburg travels Saturday to Alexander for the Spartan Invitational, the final tuneup before Sunday’s tournament draw.

Waverly def. Northwest 25-17, 25-14, 25-14

Despite 15 digs from Ashley Riley and seven kills by Haleigh Vastine, host Northwest was unable to overcome a three-set sweep to SOC II-leading Waverly Thursday.

The Mohawks entertain Rock Hill and East Saturday in a tri-match.

Clay def. Notre Dame 26-24, 25-19, 25-13

A 16-kill performance from Annie Hopkins as well as 39 assists and eight points from Gabby Hickman helped visiting Clay earn a three-set sweep Thursday at Notre Dame, tying the regular season series between the SOC I rivals at a win apiece.

Maggie Hoover had 17 assists and 12 digs, Brooke Pierron finished with 10 digs, eight kills and three blocks while Regan Kayser chipped in with eight kills to lead the Titans.

The Panthers welcome West and West Union Saturday for a tri-match. It will be a part of the Volley for the Cure. Notre Dame is on the road Tuesday as they pay a visit to Symmes Valley.

Portsmouth def. Ironton 25-14, 25-19, 25-11

Portsmouth beat Ironton in straight sets Thursday.

Jacqueline Merriweather led the way with 14 kills for the Trojans. Andi Queen recorded 4 aces and Madeline Clayton helped out Portsmouth’s offensive with 21 assists. Ryann Campbell led the way defensively for the Trojans with 8 digs.

Portsmouth travels Saturday to Logan.

Bryce Romanello scored two goals in the second half, both assisted by brother Zack Gahm, to lead Valley past New Boston 2-1 Thursday.
