Shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Portsmouth Police took a man into custody on drug trafficking charges. Jermaine C. Lawrence, 34, of 2210 Bancroft St., Columbus, is facing charges of trafficking in drugs containing cocaine; possession of drugs - cocaine; tampering with evidence; possession fo drugs and criminal trespassing.
According to the Portsmouth Police report, officers were sent to investigate a report of two men selling drugs near Bannon Park in the 1200 block of Robinson Avenue. While looking for the two male subjects, they said Lawrence walked westbound around the corner of 14th Street. Officers stopped Lawrence and asked what he was doing in Farley Square. He reportedly told them he was not a resident and was there to see someone.
Officers said they asked if he had a weapon and he refused to be patted down. That is when he was advised he was trespassing on Portsmouth Metropolitan Housing Authority (PMHA) property. He was taken into investigative custody and placed in the back seat of a cruiser. He was subsequently arrested for criminal trespassing and taken to the Scioto County Jail.
At the jail he was search and officers located a small bag of a leafy vegetation, which they identified as marijuana. They also located $159 cash. Once inside the jail, another pat down resulted in the location of a tobacco pouch containing eight bags of an off-white rock substance which field tested positive for crack cocaine. Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies also found another $120 cash in his left shoe.
