The 27th annual Hike for Hospice will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at the SOMC Hospice Center. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Teresa Ruby, Director of SOMC Hospice, said the hike is always a fun filled, family-oriented event.
“Hike for Hospice is a 5k fun walk. It is not a competition, we like to encourage folks to come and participate and bring their kids, their families and their dogs to have a nice, relaxing fun day,” Ruby said.
According to Ruby, participants of the hike raise funds by asking friends to sponsor an amount per kilometer walked or by giving an outright donation. Participants also can join in groups of three or more, presenting banners, shirts or other forms of team-promotion.
“We do the walk, and then after that we feed everybody lunch that participated, we grill hamburgers and hot dogs,” Ruby said.
Each team will receive one complimentary photo and all hikers and supporters will be eligible for various prizes, which will be presented at the end of the hike.
Ruby said they are anticipating a large crowd for the 2013 hike.
“Last year we had over 900 people that hiked, it was our biggest one ever, as far as participants. We are hoping to do better than that this year,” Ruby said.
She said SOMC Hospice raised more than $35,000 from the 2012 hike fund raising event. There is no specific cost designated to participate, both donations are left to the participants discretion.
“We ask people to come and make a personal donation, or collect money from other people in the community for donations. A lot of the people that come and participate are walking in remembrance of someone,” Ruby said.
Ruby said the hikes are more than just a walk to Hospice.
“For us, it is a community gathering, it is really about the energy, and the emotions of the day, and we just want people to come and participate,” Ruby said.
