Do you ‘like’ following along with construction progress?

Portsmouth residents are being invited to follow the progress of the gas pipeline upgrade online. Shane Cartmill of Columbia Gas of Ohio said those interested in keeping up with the project can go to the company’s Facebook page specifically dealing with that project.

Cartmill said this is the first time Columbia Gas of Ohio has utilized social media in that way to engage customers. Anyone can go to and ask questions about the project.

“We are trying it in four different places,” Cartmill said. “And this is the first time we launched them all at the same time.”

In addition to the Portsmouth project, the work is being followed in Lucas, Ohio; Springfield, Ohio and Steubenville, Ohio.

Columbia Gas of Ohio is in the process of making a $1.7 million investment in Portsmouth with the improvement of the gas pipeline system. The project is part of a 25-year, $2 billion plan to upgrade more than 4,000 miles of pipeline throughout the state of Ohio.

“The main thing was to give customers another avenue to track the progress - to ask any questions - and to learn about the construction project,” Cartmill said. “This is just one more way to reach out to people.”

The project, when completed, will include the following streets: Third Street, Fourth Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street, Eighth Street, Ninth Street, 10th Street, 11th Street, 12th Street, Findlay Street, Gay Street, Chillicothe Street, Washington Street, Court Street, and Market Street.
