Officials with the Southeast Ohio Region of Operation Christmas Child (OCC) set a goal of collecting 27,000 shoe boxes in 2012. Each of the boxes would be full of items that would be shipped to needy children throughout the world.

When the final tally was being counted for the amount of boxes collected from this region, it was discovered that 35,600 shoe boxes were collected.

“This is wonderful news, we could no be more excited,” said, Gaylene St. Leger Cox, OCC spokeswoman. “We know at least a third of the boxes we collected, came from Scioto County last year.”

Every year OCC hosts an annual packing party, in which members of the community help fill shoe boxes.

She said the shoe boxes are not just filled with tangible gifts like school supplies and small stuffed animals.

“They are also filled with the message of Jesus. That is an indescribable gift that they are going to get. Some of the children may have never heard of Jesus,” St. Leger Cox said.

“In 2011 we only filled 25,000 shoe boxes, our goal for last year was 27,000 and we greatly exceeded it,” St. Leger Cox said.

She said Samaritan’s Purse delivered its 100 millionth shoe box.

“It was delivered to a little girl who had been abandoned in the Dominican Republic,” St. Leger Cox said.

She said work has begun on planing for this year’s goals. She said the annual packing party will be held in October.

According to released information, “Operation Christmas Child is the world’s largest Christmas project collects and distributes gift-filled shoe boxes for needy children around the world. Since 1993, more than 100 million boxes have been distributed in more than 130 countries. Each year, the project mobilizes more than 100,000 volunteers in the United States.”
