At the Scioto County Commissioners meeting Tuesday morning, contracts were given to two local companies for the demolition of residences in West Portsmouth and New Boston. Funding for the demolition comes from a grant awarded to the county from the Ohio Attorney General.

Three of the residences will have to have asbestos removed from them before they can be demolished. Those residences are located at 3753 Gallia St., and 304 Ohio Ave., in New Boston, and 1524 Washington Blvd., in West Portsmouth. Solid Rock Construction of West Portsmouth was awarded a contract of $19,750 to complete the work.

An additional contract was was awarded to Sargents Environmental Remediations, of Portsmouth, for $7,500 to demolish residences located at 1420 Lakeview Ave., in New Boston, and 1625 10th St., in West Portsmouth.

Scioto County and the City of Portsmouth are splitting a $277,000 grant for demolition projects. The funding was made available through the Moving Ohio Forward Grant Program Fund.

According to grant information, “Attorney General Mike DeWine announces the launch of a new grant program to assist communities in their economic recovery by removing blighted or abandoned structures to reclaim our neighborhoods. Attorney General DeWine believes this is the first step in our housing recovery and is unique in devoting substantial resources to a demolition program. $75 million has been allocated among all of Ohio’s counties to achieve the maximum number of demolitions of blighted or abandoned residential structures.”

The Village of New Boston and the Scioto County Health Department have condemned the properties as unfit for human habitation and a threat to health and safety. Tracy Shearer, Portsmouth’s economic development director, said the city has awarded contracts for eight residences to be demolished, with funding from the grant.

She said this money is in addition to $150,000 allocated in this year’s CIP budget to tear down houses.
