John K. Welch, president and CEO of USEC, Inc., has been named Chairman of the Board of the world’s largest independent research and development organization, Battelle.

The company announced Thursday that Welch will succeed John B. McCoy, effective immediately. McCoy, who has served on the Battelle board for 21 years - 12 of them as board chair - will continue as a board member and will chair the Human Resources, Compensation and Governance Committee.

“I am honored to serve as chairman of this great organization and I look forward to working with the other board members and the executive committee to advance Battelle’s mission of developing the best technology solutions for our customers,” Welch said. “I want to thank John McCoy for his leadership during his tenure as chairman.”

Welch, who was elected to Battelle’s board in 2001, is the president and chief executive officer of USEC Inc., a leading supplier of nuclear fuel and advanced technology solutions with operations in Piketon. Welch also sits on the board of Precision Custom Components, Inc. and the Nuclear Energy Institute. A Navy veteran, Welch was the executive vice president of the Marine Systems Group at General Dynamics before joining USEC.

“John Welch will be a tremendous asset for the Battelle board as its leader,” McCoy said. “His deep understanding of Battelle and its customer base will be a strong, guiding force in directing Battelle’s future growth.”

“I would like to express my gratitude to each of these men for their service to Battelle,” said Jeff Wadsworth, president and CEO of Battelle. “John McCoy has provided excellent leadership as chairman and as a continuing member on our board brings a strong track record in business that is invaluable. John Welch, with his wealth of experience, will help us continue to fulfill Battelle’s founding principles of using science to benefit mankind.”

Wadsworth said Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management; National Security; Health and Life Sciences; and Energy, Environment and Material Sciences. It advances scientific discovery and application by conducting $6.2 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization.

Headquartered in Columbus, Battelle oversees 22,000 employees in more than 130 locations worldwide, including eight national laboratories for which Battelle has a significant management role on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the United Kingdom.
