For months the Scioto County Commissioners and Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) have been in conversations about the possible purchase or lease of county property in West Portsmouth.
According to Mike Crabtree, Chairman of the Scioto County Commissioners, the county property SOMC is considering is across from Riverside Park in West Portsmouth on U.S. 52.
“We are looking into the possibility of whether or not we can lease or sell it to them for their purpose,” Crabtree said. “We sent some paperwork over to Danielle (Parker, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney with the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office) to see what kind of a lease term we could give them and what conditions would come with it.”
Crabtree said what the county can offer SOMC will be centered around Parker’s response.
Crabtree, a professional surveyor, along with Commissioner Doug Coleman will soon conduct a survey of the property.
“We’re going to try to get a handle on the size of the lot. Doug and I are going to do that at no cost to the county. He’s agreed to help hold a pole and I’ve agreed to do the survey,” Crabtree said. “We’re still crawling our way to the top. We want to be one of the more financially stable counties in the state of Ohio. In order to do that, we’ve got to keep moving forward with the best decisions we can make.”
He said after that information is obtained it will be given to the Prosecutor’s office.
At the request of the Daily Times, SOMC issued the following statement in June about the talks, “as a part of our commitment to improving access to exceptional primary care throughout our area, Southern Ohio Medical Center is considering several options for establishing a physical presence in West Portsmouth. We (SOMC) will be welcoming Dr. Debra Lewis to SOMC and are looking forward to finding a location to make her family practice available to our patients.”
