The Scioto Water Conservation District has just received word that a Scioto County student has captured second place with his poster in state competition. Kate Sowards of SWCD said a local contest was held last October, and in November it was announced that Joshua Wiehle, a fifth grader from Minford was this area’s winner.

In July the state competition was judged and Joshua won second place overall for his division which included submissions for foutth through sixth grades.

“Every year we have traditionally done a fifth grade poster contest. We go into the schools and share it with the teachers, and the students submit posters,” Sowards said. “There’s a different theme every year, and it coordinates with the National Association for Conservation Districts (NACD). It coordinates with their national poster contest.”

Sowards said the theme is always science and conservation based and last year’s poster theme was “Where does your water shed?” Each student was given information on what a watershed is.

“Joshua’s poster was really something special,” Sowards said. “We all knew it when we saw it, and our top four winners went to the state competition. And Joshua Wiehle placed second, which is pretty awesome because we had never submitted anything to the state level. We decided last year that it was time to start sending them forward, and to have, right off the bat, someone coming in second was great.”

Sowards said SWCD is getting ready to kick off this year’s competition in October, with the theme “Dig Deeper,” about the mysteries of the soil.

“I’ll start with classroom presentations all through the month of October, and then, at our annual meeting in November, we will have the awards for the poster contest winners as well as Co-operator of the Year, Farm Woman of the Year and Logger of the Year,” Sowards said. “As well as others in the community who are called out for their amazing conservation.”
