PDT Sports Report

Coaches are expecting a move up the conference standings this season for men’s soccer as the Bears have been picked to finish sixth in the Mid-South Conference Coaches’ Preseason Poll. The poll results are based on the voting of the 10 MSC men’s soccer head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams in the poll.

Lindsey Wilson, who won the MSC Tournament last season after finishing in the runner-up spot during the regular season was selected as the preseason favorite. Rio Grande, the 2012 MSC regular season champions, were selected second in the preseason rankings. Campbellsville, University of the Cumberlands and Cumberland University rounded out the top 5 teams in the coaches’ voting.

The 2013 season will be the 15th season overall for head coach Ron Goodson. His squad returns 12 players that played in at least 12 matches last year, nine of which started nine or more contests in 2012. In his first season with the Bears, Thomas Carbonari set the single-single records for goals against average (1.49) and save percentage (.845). He started 16 of the team’s 18 games in goal and was named MSC Defensive Player of the Week on one occasion last season.

On the offensive end, the Bears will have to replace last year’s leading scorer and honorable mention All-MSC selection Luke Purpero. Junior Joseph Webster, who was an honorable mention All-MSC selection as a freshman, is the top returning goal scorer for the Bears from the 2012 season. He has 13 career goals in his first two seasons which rank him eighth on the all-time scoring list in program history. In total, six different players that scored a goal last season will be back in 2013.

The 2012 season saw the Bears finish with an overall record of 4-14, including a 3-6 record in MSC play. However, five of those losses came in games decided by one goal. The most notable of those close defeats were suffered at the hands of then-No. 1 Rio Grande in double overtime, 1-0. Four more of those losses were two-goal differences, including another hard-fought game with Lindsey Wilson who was also ranked No. 1 in the country at the time of that game.

The 2013 season will get underway on the road August 25 at Saint Xavier. The home opener will be September 7 against Saint Francis while conference play also begins at home on August 14 against the University of the Cumberlands.

SSU women’s soccer picked to finish 7th

Women’s soccer has been picked to finish 7th in the Mid-South Conference Preseason Poll. The Bears received 37 voting points in the poll based on the voting of the 10 MSC women’s soccer head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams in the poll.

Last year’s NAIA National Champion and MSC Regular Season Champion Lindsey Wilson was tabbed as the preseason favorite while MSC Tournament Champion Cumberland University was picked to finish runner-up in the poll. Campbellsville, Georgetown and Bluefield rounded out the top-five teams in the preseason conference rankings.

Shawnee State returns eight players that started at least 10 matches a season ago. This includes sophomores Jessica Fair and Schuyler Jones who each scored a team-high nine goals in their freshmen campaigns and rank in the top-10 in program history in goals scored after just one season. Jones was named an honorable mention All-MSC selection following the 2012 season. Junior Allison Nagle, who has scored 13 goals in her first two seasons and is ranked ninth in goals scored, also returns. All told, the Bears return over 75-percent of last year’s total offense.

Defensively, junior Aubrey Johnson and sophomore Tasha Wilson return after each started all 19 games a season ago. In goal, junior Emily Kuehn also looks to return after starting 13 games last season. She is third all-time in the SSU record book in career saves (157) and wins (13).

The 2013 season will be the eighth under head coach Rob Appell who has a career record of 61-55-5 in his first seven seasons. A year ago, the Bears went 8-11 overall, including a 3-4 record in the Mid-South Conference. The 2013 season will get underway on the road on August 25 against Rochester while the home opener is slated for August 28 vs. Cincinnati Christian. The nine-game conference schedule will begin on September 14 against the University of the Cumberlands.
