If the Scioto County Fair is about the kids, the 4-H Livestock Auction on Saturday is the pinnacle of their hard work and the highlight of the week’s activities.

“This is kind of the culmination of what the livestock kids do for their projects all year,” Jo Williams, Extension Educator - 4-H Development, said as prospective bidders took their seats in the livestock arena Saturday. “In addition to this, they are supposed to be doing a project book - keeping records of the animal. They raise the animal, feed the animal, take care of the animal, and in the end they have the auction.”

Williams said what the 4-H advisers and officials really enjoy about the auction is the support they see from the local community, the businesses, and others who come out to reward the kids for their hard work.

“What I always tell the kids is, what these people are actually giving you is not what the animal is worth,” Williams said. “The animal is worth the market value. What these people are giving you is rewarding you because you’re involved in a good program and they know that you’re responsible and hard working young people. So all these people come out here and support you because of that. Not because they want to buy a thousand dollar sheep.”

Kids with lumps in their throats walked their projects to the arena, while business leaders and others looked over the ones they planned to bid on.

“We appreciate everybody coming out and supporting our kids, because our kids are very fortunate,” Williams said. “They do very well at this sale, and what I always remind them is, any money you get at this sale is over and above what the animal is actually worth. They’re being rewarded for doing good things and for doing a good job with their projects.”
