Recently Shawnee State University (SSU) professor Dr. Andrew Feight and the students in his digital history course launch a free app, loaded with history of southern Ohio called Scioto Historical.
According to information provided by SSU, Scioto Historical is an internet-based education tool that can be used on a computer or downloaded to Android or Apple iOS mobile devices. It includes eight historic tours with information provided by Feight and his students who conducted extensive research on the history of the region.
The project was developed in cooperation with Cleveland State University’s Center for Public History and Digital Humanities and with support from the Scioto Foundation and the Shawnee State University Development Foundation.
The app features original music by Michael Barnhart assistant professor in the Fine, Digital and Performing Arts Department at SSU, and a series of historic paintings by muralist Herb Roe.
“The Scioto Valley has such rich history. I wanted to not only capture this history but to share it using new technologies. What we have is something that can be used by local residents, tourists, students, and anyone who wants to know more about the people and events that impacted our region,” Feight said in a released statement.
The app takes users through the history depicted in the Portsmouth Flood Wall Murals with emphasis on the Flood of 1937. It also features the history of the Portsmouth shoe industry and the site Alexandria. The app also includes a tour of historical sites on the Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail.
“This project has been many months in the making and is an example of ways that new technologies can be used in education — both inside and outside of our classrooms. Drew and his students have conducted original research to provide eight different historic tours, including the Scioto Valley and Dunmore’s War, Shawnee Forest, Buena Vista area, Three-C Camps, Pioneer Scioto and Adams Counties, Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail, and the underground railroad. At least four other tours are in development and will be added,” Dr. Rita Rice Morris, President of SSU said in a released statement.
According to released information content for the app will be added and updated through the digital history class.
