Shawnee State Volleyball Head Coach Susan Shelton has announced her team’s 2013 schedule. The Bears schedule features 31 regular season matches that will begin on Friday, August 23. Also on the schedule are 18 Mid-South Conference matchups as the Bears will have a home and road match against each of the nine MSC Schools this fall. SSU will play a total of 10 home matches this season.

The 2013 season gets underway on August 23-24 when the team travels to Montreat College for the Volley in the Mountains Tournament. It will play Mount Vernon Nazarene and the hosts to open the season before meetings with Coastal Georgia and Northwood on that Saturday.

After, it will be time for Mid-South competition as the Bears open with five straight conference contests on the road. The MSC slate starts with a trip to rival Rio Grande on Sept. 3. The Bears will have a chance to avenge their MSC quarterfinal loss on Sept. 10 at Campbellsville before making the trip to MSC Tournament Champion Lindsey Wilson on Sept. 14. The conference road trip ends with matches at the University of the Cumberlands (Sept. 16) and Cumberland University (Sept. 19).

However, the Bears will stay in Tennessee over that weekend as they participate in the Cumberland Volleydawg Classic. They will play Fisk and Lindenwood on Friday, Sept. 20 while Saturday begins with a match against Union before a rematch with Cumberland in non-conference action. These matches will all be played in the central time zone which is one hour behind the time listed on the schedule page.

After a month on the road, the Bears will open up the home slate with four more conference matches at home beginning on Sept. 24 against St. Catharine. MSC Regular Season Champion Georgetown comes to Waller Gymnasium on Sept. 28 while SSU opens October with home dates against Bluefield (Oct. 1) and Pikeville (Oct. 3).

The day after Pikeville, SSU will hit the road for the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech. The weekend will start off with a match against the hosts followed by a meeting with Saint Ambrose. The following day sees the Bears battle with Madonna and Bethel. Three more road MSC matches await the Bears from Oct. 10-17 as SSU will make trips to Georgetown (Oct. 10), St. Catharine (Oct. 12) and Pikeville (Oct. 17).

The only home non-conference date of the season will be Oct. 18 against Point Park before a quick trip to Bluefield on Oct. 19. A stretch of four matches in four days ends with a home match against Lindsey Wilson on Oct. 20.

That match with the Blue Raiders will be the first of five straight home games to close out the regular season. Campbellsville (Oct. 26), Cumberland University (Nov. 1), University of the Cumberlands (Oct. 2), and Rio Grande (Oct. 7) will close out the regular season portion of the schedule.

The MSC Tournament will open on Nov. 14 with the quarterfinals for the top eight teams in the regular season standings with the semifinals and finals on Nov. 15 and 16.

The 2013 season will be Shelton’s third as head coach of the Bears. They will return nine of their 11 players that played in at least 25 matches, including two of last year’s three All-MSC honorees in Kirsti Yates and Paige Zelich. The Bears went 22-13 last season and finished fifth in the MSC Standings. That win total was an 11-win improvement from two seasons ago and the third-largest single season win turnaround in program history.
