After following in his brother’s footsteps, Nate Cadogan has decided to walk down his own path.

After an up and down collegiate career with Penn State, Cadogan has decided to transfer before the start of his senior campaign.

“I had a conversation with head coach Bill O’Brien,” Cadogan said. “I have a goal of making the league (National Football League) some day and I wasn’t going to get enough playing time.”

The former Portsmouth Trojan appreciated the conversation with O’Brien.

“He put all of the cards on the table to help me make the best decision,” Cadogan said.

The former three-star recruit has not made a decision on his next college destination.

“I am going to start calling schools to see who’s looking for a left tackle or defensive tackle,” Cadogan said. “I might leave (Division I) alone because of my situation. It’s rare to come in and take over at that level.”

Because of NCAA sanctions against Penn State, stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal, Cadogan will not be penalized for transferring. Under normal circumstances, a player deciding to transfer would have to sit out a year before being eligible to play the following season.

Cadogan reflected on the sanctions levied against the University by NCAA President Mark Emmert.

“It was an awkward situation,” Cadogan said. “We weren’t sure what was going on. We just pulled together and kept the tradition going despite the distraction.”

Cadogn’s career accomplishment came in a come-from-behind effort against the Northwestern Wildcats, which gave the late Joe Paterno his 400th career victory. Cadogan caught the game winning three-yard touchdown pass in the victory.

Although the University of Penn State has been under constant scrutiny, Cadogan is leaving Happy Valley with positive memories.

“It was a great college experience,” Cadogan said. “The staff has changed since I was recruited but I had great times.”
