Portsmouth City Councilman Kevin W. Johnson announced Friday morning the members of the city Economic Development and Sustainability Committee, for which he is chairman.

The committee was one of six new committees established recently by Portsmouth City Council. The committee handles all issues relating to efforts to aid economic advancement and provide for a suitable living environment for all citizens; develop solutions and goals for creating urban innovation and design. Key responsibilities are economic and community affairs, Engineering Department services, housing and neighborhood services, and a city comprehensive plan.

Committee Chairman Johnson announced Friday that he will formally make his appointments to the committee during the next meeting of Portsmouth City Council on Monday.

On his list of appointments are Angela Davis (Deputy Director, Social Service Department, CAO of Scioto County), Kim Hill (Broker/Owner, Kim Hill Real Estate), Mike Otworth (President, Green Ocean Innovation - advisor to JobsOhio), Bill Raison (Chief, City Fire Department), Chris Smith (City Health Commissioner), and Donald Washburn (Director, Economic Development & Internships, Shawnee State University).

Johnson said he will also appoint an Advisory Subcommittee, with members Dr. Johnny Ray Bernard, Jr., Barb Bradbury, Gabe Brown, Jon Jenkins, Brian McMullen, Gail Miller and Trent Williams.

“The response to my e-mail requesting help and participation in the nascent Economic Development and Sustainability Committee of council has been most encouraging. Thanks to all who communicated their interest in participating or serving,” Johnson wrote in a statement sent to the Daily Times Friday.

The first meeting of the Economic Development and Sustainability Committee is Wednesday, July 10 at 6 p.m., at Port City Cafe (front) on Chillicothe Street; then the second Wednesday of every other month (Sept. 11, Nov. 13, and Jan. 8, 2014).

In addition to the Economic Development and Sustainability Committee, council also announced the creation of the Public Works, Codes and Standards Committee (Chairman Jim Kalb), the Personnel and Performance Committee (Chairman Kevin E. Johnson), the Parks, Service, Building, Recreation and Cultural Committee (Chairman Rich Saddler), the Legal, Legislative and Safety Committee (Chairman Gene Meadows), and the Budget and Finance Committee (Chairman Steve Sturgill).

Anyone interested in serving on one of the committees should contact the chairman of that committee.
