Earlier this year the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth pledged to join the anti-bullying movement and support local efforts to bring awareness to children in the region. Recently, the club received notification that a grant had been approved to support these efforts.

“Bullying is an issue that is easy to define but difficult to address,” said Kiwanis President John Johnson. “What we hope to accomplish is to provide education to local school children on this issue and make a difference.”

Johnson said the club applied to the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation to ask for support in purchasing educator’s kits for local schools to be able to show the movie ‘Bully’ as a means to educate on the effects of bullying.

“This is not a project where you can simply count the children that have benefited or the number of lies that have been saved. But what we can do as Kiwanians is make sure children get the message and that schools have the resources to provide that message,” Johnson explained.

Bully is a 2011 documentary film about bullying in U.S. schools. The film follows the lives of five students who face bullying on a daily basis.

The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth received a total of $526.37 from the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation to purchase Bully educator’s kits. Each of the school districts will will be offered one of the kits along with a presentation by a Portsmouth Kiwanian and Key Club member.

“We want to make a difference in our community and our future begins with our youth. If we can impact just one life, we will make a difference,” Johnson said.

The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth meets each Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. at Oscars in Portsmouth. For more information about the club, visit us on the web at Kiwanisclubofportsmouth.org or like us on facebook at Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth.
