With eight games in the next four days before the second scheduled tournament of the year, Post 23 needed to start the week on the right foot Monday with a home doubleheader against Morehead (Ky.) Post 126.

Post 23 reached the first goal in the 6-4 opener that went the scheduled seven innings. The two teams played a five-inning game afterwards but did not finish at press time.

Despite being outhit 6-5, Post 23 manufactured runs with patience at the plate. In the first inning, Portsmouth drew five walks and another batter was hit by a pitch to result in a 4-0 lead.

Post 126 made its biggest dent in the third thanks to four-straight base hits on a two-out rally to cut the deficit to 4-3. Post 23 retaliated in the home half of the third with a two-run single by Matt Penix to score Zach Brown and Wesley Book.

It was enough run support for Brady Johnson, who allowed one more run in the fourth but settled down to retire 11 out of the final 15 batters he faced to earn his first win of the summer. Johnson struck out five but walked seven and induced double plays in each of the first two innings of the game.

Offensively, Penix was the only Portsmouth hitter with two hits. Book, Daulton Kenyon and Brady Knittel each recorded the other Post 23 hits while Austin Howard recorded the final RBI in the contest on a bases-loaded walk in the first.

Portsmouth plays its second home doubleheader in as many days Tuesday when Waverly Post 142 visits for a pair of District 7 games. Post 23 will go to Ashland (Ky.) Post 76 Wednesday for a twin bill before Friday’s Jim Jadwin Memorial Tournament in Chillicothe.
