Bulging, twisty, rope-like veins can cause more than embarrassment — they can cause your legs to feel tired, heavy, achy and even restless. Untreated, varicose veins can lead to skin changes like rashes, redness and sores.

King’s Daughters will offer a free varicose vein screening beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, at King’s Daughters Medical Center Ohio, Suite 115, 2001 Scioto Trail in Portsmouth.

“There are a lot of people who have them, and usually people who have them know that they have them, because they have these bulging ugly veins,” Erin Bounds, Marketing Manager for KDMC, said. “What they don’t often realize, is that they have symptoms associated with them. So they look at them, and they say that their legs are ugly, but they may not associate those varicose veins with certain symptoms, like a feeling of heaviness or achiness in the leg. So a lot of times they just think about the aesthetics of it.”

Bounds said what people who have varicose veins often don’t realize is that they can cause discomfort and that they can be a symptom of an underlying vascular problem. She said there are two types of varicose veins — ones that look like spider veins and large bulging veins.

What may surprise most people is that men can have varicose veins as frequently as women.

“Women look at their legs and go, ‘my legs are ugly, I’ve got to cover them up, or wear dark hose, or whatever,’ but men can have varicose veins too,” Bounds said. “And they can cause them as much pain and suffering as they can cause women. So it’s as important for men to pay attention to that as well.”

Bounds said individuals are invited for a free evaluation of varicose veins as well as information about their causes and treatment. The screening is open to adults age 18 and older and consists of a paper and pencil questionnaire followed by a visual exam by interventional radiologist Wes Lewis, M.D.

Appointments are required by calling 1-888-377-KDMC (5362).
