NEW BOSTON — The fifth annual New Boston Community Yard Sale is Saturday, June 1, giving residents an opportunity to clean out their closets, find some great deals and get outside to meet their neighbors.
The annual Community Yard Sale began when New Boston resident Bryce Flowers pitched the idea to Village Council in 2009. The village liked the idea and agreed to set aside one day a year — the first Saturday of June — when everyone was invited to have a yard sale and wouldn’t have to purchase a permit.
“My hope was, and still is, that people will come into our community and see the friendliness, and also give us the opportunity as a community to get to know one another,” Flowers said at last year’s community yard sale. “I think it has absolutely been a success. Throughout the year, I have New Boston people who talk to me now who never did in the stores. We are beginning to know one another as neighbors, as it was in the good old days.”
Last year Harrisonville Avenue/Ohio 139 was closed in New Boston for road work, which limited participation in the community yard sale. This year the road is open and New Boston Mayor James Warren said he believes that will draw more traffic and attention through the village yard sales.
“We do this so people have a chance to clean out their house a little bit and make a little money that maybe can help them with their summer vacation plans, or maybe just some extra money for new school clothes when it returns in the fall. It’s also a good community function where everybody gets to know each other,” Warren said.
Food vendors and New Boston churches are also invited to join by setting up their own booths in the village. The day usually starts at 9 a.m., but people begin their bargain hunting much earlier than that. This year, Warren said, there will be no time limitations.
“I’m not going to set a time, because some people setup and close down a little later,” Warren said.
If you miss it this year, you’ll have another chance in the fall. Village Council this year approved two dates for the community yard sale this year — June 1 and Sept. 7, 2013.
