MINFORD — No. 5 Symmes Valley came from behind to force extra innings before falling to No. 3 Leesburg Fairfield 7-4 in eight innings in the second District IV Southeast District Championship game at Minford High School.


The Vikings fell behind in the first inning after starting pitcher Stephanie Brown gave up a three-run home run to Heather Sanderson. Brown walked back-to-back batters with one out in the inning before allowing the home run.


After a 1-2-3 second inning, Brown allowed a run in the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Justice Hatten singled, followed by a single from Sirenity Smith and a run producing single from Courtney Huff to increase the lead to 4-0.


Symmes Valley began making its comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catlin Carpenter led the inning off with a walk. Chianne Hively followed suit with a single.


Amber Bryant loaded the bases with a single of her own. With the bases loaded, Brown flew out to center, which scored Carpenter to cut the defict to 4-1.


The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead even further. Kaitlyn Payne doubled with one out, followed by a walk from Tiara Hatfield. With two outs in the inning, Carpenter got a clutch hit to score Payne and Hatfield.


Symmes Valley tied the contest at four a piece in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the inning, Brown doubled, followed by a Keathley walk. The next batter, Payne, singled on a full count to score Brown.


In the top of the eighth inning, Fairfield scored three runs on three Vikings’ errors.


Symmes Valley got the tying run to the plate in the bottom half but was unable to plate any runs.


The Vikings return every player on the current roster.
