Members of the Southern Ohio Port Authority met in regular session on Thursday to consider a number of items, including establishing committees. One of the committees would be responsible for searching for an executive director for the organization, another would be responsible for finding the necessary funding.

“As you all know, we’ve created this situation with an executive director. We’ve got to find an executive director which will be one big task and the second task will be to pay for that operation,” said Todd Book, SOPA Chairman.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Times, Book said the responsibilities of the executive director would include being responsible for the day-to-day operation of the port authority, being the liaison with business interests in the community and also outside of the community.

He called the move to hire an executive director a new structure for the Port Authority.

“Previously it was a one person show, now were trying to make it more of a community responsibility with the members of the Port Authority,” Book said.

According to the Rules and Regulations of the Southern Ohio Port Authority of Scioto County adopted at SOPA’s April meeting, the executive director shall, “submit plan and programs for the board economic development activities. Develop a program for promotion and public relations of the Southern Ohio Port Authority. Develop and carry out a program to promote and publicize the advantages of the Southern Ohio Port Authority to the rail, barge shippers, trucking companies, importers and exporters and other agencies using the shipping capabilities of Southern Ohio. Seek, obtain and supervise the administration of grants, loans and other financial assistance from Federal, State and local sources to enhance Southern Ohio Port Authority programs, facilities and services.”

Book said he hopes the Port Authority could have someone in place as the executive director going into fourth quarter of this year.

“Between now and the end of September or October we could find that person. That may be a little aggressive but, we don’t have a lot of time to waste,” Book said.

As for qualifications Book said, “We want to find the most qualified person who is in the best position to help the community and use the tools provided by the Port Authority to enhance business opportunities in southern Ohio.”
