Tuesday concluded the two-day Division II Boys Tennis Sectional Tournament as a plethora of area tennis players will head to Athens for next week’s district tournament.


On the singles side, Valley’s Nick Johnson finished as the tournament runner-up while Minford’s Josh Parsons will go into the districts as the No. 4 seed. After Johnson defeated Washington Court House’s Garrett Phipps 6-0, 7-5 and Parsons claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Phipps’ teammate Drake Berlin to start Tuesday’s action, Johnson defeated Parsons 6-4, 6-2 to advance into the championship match.


Johnson was ultimately defeated by Hillsboro’s Reese Leibreich 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Parsons dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to Athens’ Quinn Scanlan in the third place match.


On the doubles side, Waverly’s Phillip Hart and Nathan Wilburn won the doubles championship after defeating Wheelersburg’s Ethan Hiles and Duncan MacDonald 6-0, 6-0, New Boston’s Emily Waugh and Austin Raines 6-2, 6-4 and Gallia Academy’s Connor Christian and Sean Saltzgaber 7-5, 6-3 for the crown.


Clay’s Mark Shaffer and Michael Schmidt will be the No. 3 seed after defeating Washington Court House’s Carson Ferguson and Noah Mesker 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Christian/Saltzgaber and winning 6-2, 6-4 over Waugh/Raines. Waugh and Raines’ only win came in their first match, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Gallia Academy’s T. Jaye McCalla and Riley Nibert en route to a No. 4 seed for the New Boston pair.


After dropping their first match 6-1, 6-0 to Christian and Saltzgaber, Wheelersburg’s Walker Roe and Zack Jordan defeated Ferguson/Mesker 6-2, 6-4 and McCalla/Nibert 7-6, 6-3 for fifth place. Hiles and MacDonald finished eighth after a 6-2, 6-2 loss to McCalla and Nibert and a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Ferguson and Mesker.

Justice Swords had a memorable day as she went 2-for-2 and knocked in the game-winning run Tuesday as No. 5 Portsmouth eliminated No. 12 Nelsonville-York 4-3 in a Division III Southeast Sectional Semifinal.

Swords’ RBI single with the bases loaded scored Jada Jenkins to end the game. Swords also had a home run, a walk and was hit by a pitch.

The Trojans travel to No. 4 Rock Hill Friday in a sectional final. The Redwomen defeated No. 13 Coal Grove 10-0 Tuesday.
