SSU Sports Release
LIMA– Golf finished off its 2013 spring season at the OSU-Lima Tournament in grand fashion as the Bears posted their best team score of the entire season by firing a 293 in the 43rd Annual Baron Invitational. This tournament is the longest running tournament within the state of Ohio. This marks the second straight year that SSU has captured this tournament title. The Bears bested the field by 19 strokes as Akron-Wayne finished a distant second with a score of 312 in the 11-team field.
Fresh off of his performance at the Mid-South Championship that earned him a spot on the All-MSC team as an honorable mention selection, freshman Nick Saunders captured his first individual title as a collegiate player as he shot one-under par 71 to take home the top medalist honors. His score tied his low round for the year as he went under par for the second time in three tournaments. He becomes the second SSU player to capture top medalist honors at a tournament this season.
The other player to capture medalist honors this season for the Bears was fellow freshman Josh Zornes. Both Zornes and sophomore teammate Rob Pell finished in a second-place tie in this tournament as each fired a one-over-par 73. This marked the fourth time this season Zornes fired 73 or better in a round while it was the best score of Pell’s first two seasons with the Bears.
Rounding out the Bears scores were Jon Crace who finished with a four-over par 76 for the Bears’ fourth score while Richie Bechtol shot five-over par 77. Crace’s score tied his season low in what was the third time that he has carded a 76. Bechtol’s score was also a season low for him as he also carded a 77 during the Shawnee State Invitational.
This tournament looks to only build momentum into next season as all six of the players that competed this past spring will be back again in the fall. Bechtol is the only junior of the group while Pell is just a sophomore. Saunders, Zornes and Crace each just wrapped up their freshman campaigns for the Bears.
