BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Nick Saunders finished off a top 10 individual finish at the Mid-South Conference Golf Championship Tuesday as the Bears wrapped up a seventh place performance in the team standings.
Saunders’ finish is a new best for an SSU golfer at the MSC Championship while the seventh-place team finish matches last year’s finish. In the final round of the conference championship, the Bears shot 332 as a team.
Saunders finished off his top 10 individual finish with a final round 81. His three-day score came out to an 11-over par score of 227.
Prior to the his finish Tuesday, the highest an SSU golfer has placed at the Mid-South Championship was 16th. He finished the tournament at six-over par on par 4 holes — the sixth-best score of tournament — and 12th amongst players in par 5 scoring at even-par. Saunders also recorded 38 pars over the tournament which was the third-most of any player.
His finish earned him a spot on the All-Mid-South Team as an honorable mention selection. He becomes the first SSU golfer to earn All-MSC honors since joining the conference for the 2010-11 season. He is the first SSU golfer to earn All-Conference accolades since Bryan Spille did so in 2009 when SSU competed in the AMC.
Josh Zornes finished 29th overall after shooting 84 in his final round to card a three-day total of 240. He finished the tournament a two-over par in par 3’s.
That tied him for ninth overall amongst players in the field. Rob Pell finished the championship in 37th overall with a final round 86.
Jon Crace tied Saunders for the Bears’ low round of the day with an 81. That score gave him a three-day total of 247 to place 41st.
Richie Bechtol finished his tournament off with an 87 in the third round. His three day total was 248 and tied him for 42nd place.
Completing his play as an individual, Corey Arthur shot 89 in his final round for a three-day total of 262 to finish tied for 52nd.
SSU ranked sixth amongst all teams in par 4 scoring as it shot 69-over par for the week on these holes. The Bears ranked seventh on the par 5’s with a score of 17-over while they were eighth amongst the teams on par 3’s with a combined score of 39-over par. They finished in a tie for sixth amongst all teams with 143 pars over the three rounds and were also sixth in total birdies with 22.
The SSU golf team will wrap up its season Friday at the OSU Lima Invitational. That tournament will be played at the Hawthorne Hills Golf Club.
