Southern Ohio Correctional Facility at Lucasville is one of only five facilities in the state to make Johnson Controls’, “Top Earth Day Champions in Ohio” list.

Johnson Controls, a company that offers solutions they say increase energy efficiency in buildings, celebrated Earth Day by releasing its “Top Earth Day Champions in Ohio” list to highlight organizations statewide they say saved the carbon equivalent of 16,300 acres of forest through energy efficiency and renewable energy projects at their facilities.

“Organizations across Ohio are making significant environmental improvements while attacking energy waste, reducing operational costs and creating strong financial paybacks,” David M. Peters, regional vice president of Johnson Controls Building Efficiency, said. “Earth Day is the perfect time to recognize these commitments to sustainability and remind others that building efficiency creates a better environmental and fiscal future for the Buckeye state.”

SOCF reportedly saved 3,993 metric tons in carbon reduction emissions, which is 3,273 equivalent pine tree acres. In addition to SOCF, Youngstown State University, the city of Lakewood, the city of Parma, and the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

The champions earned a spot on the list by making their facilities more efficient using a variety of measures, including: utilizing building management systems to optimize energy and operational efficiency, installing renewable energy technology, using more efficient lighting, and updating heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
