April 25 marks 20 years of marriage to my best friend, my husband and confidante, Mark Williams. To those of you who are married, or have been married, you know that marriage can be quite complex or challenging, to say the least.
At the inception of marriage we are so smitten with our spouses that it seems as if they could do no wrong, then something called time happens. Yes, with time all of those idiosyncrasies about ourselves collide, and our true characters unfold and reality kicks in. Henceforth, how we respond to the new information, the new knowledge about one another, along with other challenges, dictates to whether or not our marriage will stand the test of time.
Statistics say that over half of marriages in the U.S end in divorce due to a host of reasons. I must admit that there were times in our marriage when divorce looked like a way out, but by the grace of God, we were able to surmount the obstacles that were standing in our way. This leads me to my next point, which is that every marriage must be sustained by what I will refer to as a “3-fold cord.”
The latter portion of Ecclesiastes 4:12 in the bible states, “and a 3-fold cord is not quickly broken.”
In a marriage, if God is the foundation of the marriage, and it functions according to biblical principles, the man is in right relationship with God, and the woman is as well, you have that 3-fold cord. This is God’s design for marriage, and when it exists the storms of life may blow, but they will not overtake that marriage, it will stay in tact.
My friend, if you are in a hard place in your marriage right now I want to encourage you not to give up, and not to throw in the towel, especially if there are children involved. You may say, that’s easy for you to say, you don’t know what I am going through, but believe me, I probably do. Nonetheless, together with God, as well as Christian marriage counseling and biblical guidance here we are, 20 years and counting. Remember, with God all things are possible, and your marriage can move from barely surviving to thriving if you will both submit to the lordship of Jesus Christ. Happy 20th Anniversary Mark!
