Scioto County 4-H held its annual volunteer conference on Monday at the Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Friends Center, with 149 volunteers and 55 4-H clubs represented.

“Tonight (Monday) is our annual volunteer training, so it’s mandatory that all 4-H clubs are represented here. If they are not here, then they will have to do a make-up training later in the month,” said Jo Williams, Scioto County 4-H spokeswoman.

She said the conference is held every year and is mandatory to attend every other year as a way for leaders to stay up-to-date on all of the changes and activities going on.

“We are going to do a lesson with them about doing community service in their clubs. In February we were one of the organizations that SOMC donated $1,000 to. Since they are so good about donating back to the community, we thought it would be a good idea to use some of that money to encourage clubs to donate back to the community. Pledging your hands to larger service is part of the 4-H pledge,” Williams said.

She said the clubs were also presented with community service ideas they can implement. Some of the other items that were discussed included, some of the updated rules for 4-H’ers during the Scioto County Fair.

“We also recognized several volunteers for their years of service and we are giving our Friends of 4-H Award to SOMC,” Williams said.

She said, other activities of the conference include dinner and a silent auction.
