Football For a Cause event upcoming

The Driven Foundation, a non-profit organization of former Ohio State University football player Roy Hall, will host the Football for a Cause event Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the Portsmouth Coliseum at 3:30 p.m.
The Driven Foundation was established by Hall five years ago as a way to reach out to underprivileged youth and families.
“It started out as just a high school football camp in Cleveland, Ohio. I had 25 former Ohio State football players come and speak to the youth about topics such as handling adversity, ” Hall said.
Hall said he was motivated by the positive response of the youth after the camp and wanted to do more.
“During my rookie year during camp for the Indianapolis Colts I got my writing pad out and my ideas just blossomed from there,” Hall said.
From there, he formed the Driven Foundation, and saw it as an opportunity to give back to young people and to try and rebuild families.
Hall said that he can relate to the struggles that many face as the result of his childhood experiences.
“I understand what it is like to come from a broken home. My dad was a heroin addict and my mom took care of us from the time that I was six years old. Some of the financial strains and struggles on my family were very difficult,” Hall said. “Now I am in a position to be a resource for different families, and young people from a mentoring stand point, to an outreach standpoint. I try to give myself away as much as possible to help people, and to give them the encouragement and enthusiasm that they need.”
Hall played for three years in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts, and played one year with the Detroit Lions.
The event will also include Maurice Clarett and Antonio Smith — also former OSU football players — who will assist the teams as guest coaches along with himself.
According to Hall, Portsmouth High School alumni from the 1980s football teams will battle against alumni from 1990s in the flag football game. All proceeds will go the Steven Hunter Fund, and the Driven Foundation.
Admission for Flag Football For a Cause is $5, with free autographs to go to the first 50 people arriving.
Hall said he hopes to implement other events and activities in the Portsmouth area in the future that will be beneficial to the local community.
