Merlene Womack, 73


Merlene Ioma Womack, 73, of Portsmouth, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. She was born Dec. 24, 1939 in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Jesse Timothy and Marcella Brown Baggette, Sr.


Merlene was a member of Pleasant Green Baptist Church, and she was a former caregiver and cook who worked through the Community Action Organization.


She was preceded in death by her first husband, Sam McGee; and on July 2, 2009 by her husband Robert Lee Womack, whom she married Dec. 18, 1988 in Greenup, Ky.


Surviving are her son, Franco Lucas of Lucasville; her daughter, Kacee Nakia (Rick) Taylor of Portsmouth; four brothers, Lucius Jones of Los Angeles, Ca., Tony Baggette and Roger Jones of Columbus, and Darrell Jones of Toledo; eight sisters, Lola Saunders of Atlanta, Ga., Anita George, Katherine Jones and Rhoda Scales, all of Portsmouth, Barbara Scales of California, Susan Baggette of Columbus, Brenda Jones of Los Angeles and Danise Jones of Peoria, Ill.; and twelve grandchildren, Brieawna and Christopher Wade, Alexis, Elysia, Kollyn, Ayden, Jaylen, Jacksyn, Tretyn and Tazman Lucas, Gavyn and Taylor Bender.


She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jessie T. “Porky” Baggette, Jr., and Preston Baggette.


A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Green Baptist Church with Rev. Clarence Parker officiating.


Arrangements are under the direction of the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth.
