Social media has lit up over the over the weekend after a report of an abused dog in Eifort, Ohio. According to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, officers have been to the scene and report the dog in question is fine and was not in distress.

According to Todd Miller, Chief Deputy for the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, officers have been to the residence on two occasions and have reported the dog good spirits.

“We had an officer out over the weekend to check this dog. The dog had food, had water. We went back out today (Monday) and Captain Robert Woodford went out with a court appointed humane agent (who Miller declined to identify). The agent indicated the dog is not in distress. The dog was jumping around and was glad to see people,” Miller said. “The owner indicated the dog was a stray and came to them four or five weeks ago malnourished and beat up. These people are simply trying to get it nursed back to health.”

Miller said the dog had plenty of food and water and had a dog house. He described the dog as brown and of mixed breed.

“The humane agent said the dog was not in distress and it sounds like the owners are trying to do what all of these other people are trying to do — rescue it and save it,” Miller said.

Miller said the typical practice in dealing with reports of abused animals depends on the department’s call logs for the day.

“It depends on our call log, if we get a call with an issue involving an animal, if at all possible I try to have my road units go by and take a look and try to make some kind of assessment. Although, that’s not what my guys are trained to do,” Miller said. “If they are concerned with the animal or don’t feel comfortable making an assessment we’ll contact the humane agent and pass the information on to him.”

Miller said on the day when this complaint came in, the Sheriff’s Office was really busy.

“I told dispatch to get a hold of the humane agent and see if he’s available and it just so happens he was available and went to check it out,” Miller said.

Social media speculation had a deceased dog on the same premises. Miller said a search of the premises showed no signs of a deceased dog.

“The Internet went from another dead dog to piles of dead dogs. The humane agent along with Captain Woodford walked the property and adjacent property and found no evidence of any dead dogs. They found no bones, no fur, no carcases, they did not find anthing,” Miller said.

When asked how many humane agents the Sheriff’s Department calls upon, Miller said, “we have two that we are aware of that’s appointed.”

He said the owners of the dog are not facing any charges.
