Southern Ohio Medical Center says it will not take its current relationship with OhioHealth to the next level, that is, full affiliation.

In a statement released to the Daily Times by the management of SOMC, the company said, “After careful discussions with our stakeholders, the SOMC Board of Directors decided that SOMC will remain an independent community-owned hospital. We will continue our special affiliation with the OhioHealth system.”

SOMC had been an affiliate with OhioHealth from 1984 to 2006, and although not directly affiliated with OhioHealth since 2006, the Southern Ohio Medical Center board of directors announced in April of 2012 their plan to pursue a merger with that company announcing at that time they were looking into becoming a full member.

This week information came out of HealthData that read, “Southern Ohio Medical Center is seeking re-acquisition by OhioHealth. A memorandum of understanding is expected in the next few weeks, with a joint statement by May.”

When presented with that statement, SOMC responded with the statement above, saying they have chosen to remain an independent, community-owned hospital.

In February, SOMC made an announcement that they would be partnering with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to bring additional resources and care to pediatric and neonatal patients.
