Shawnee State University is celebrating Diversity Week from Monday, March 25 through Saturday, March 30. The “Be Educated About Diversity” (B.E.A.D.) project encompasses several diversity issues, such as race, ethnicity, accessibility issues, gender, sexual orientation and religion.

On Monday, March 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the University Center Room 230 West, the B.E.A.D. project activity will ask participants to examine themselves, their lives, and the people they are surrounded by in light of several possible diversity categories.

Tuesday, March 26, “A Day in the Life” participants will meet from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then spend the day in an alternate identity to experience what others experience on a daily basis. The difference can be ethnicity, racial, sexual orientation, age, ability and gender.

Wednesday, March 27, a panel, diversity quiz and label activity will be held in UC Room 230 West from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Participants will experience the effects of inclusion and exclusion in a simulated activity. Participants will be given a label that they can’t see but others can and they will be treated according to their labels. Students will also test their diversity knowledge through a series of quizzes of their choice. Following the activities there will be a panel of individuals from diverse backgrounds to talk about how labels have affected their lives and caused undue issues because of those labels.

Thursday, March 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., “Where the Spirit Is” Church Fair will be held with local churches, temples and mosques in the area represented in the UC Lobby 104 and 108. It is an opportunity to learn about the many places to worship and interact with the local community.

Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Smith Coffee House, “Guess Who’s Straight” panel discussion will challenge your thinking and break down stereotypes as the audience is asked to identify the sexual orientation of the panel members.

Saturday evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., a Drag Show will be held in the Sodexo Ballroom UC 230. This show will culminate Diversity Week. All the events are free and open to the public. For more information, call Carla Daniels at 740-351-3553 or e-mail cdaniels@shawnee.edu.
