2013 Southern Ohio Academic Competition winners

On March 7, the Southern Ohio Academic Competition Tournament took place at Shawnee State University. The Tournament was hosted by the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center and Shawnee State University.
Teams from Clay, East, Green, New Boston, Notre Dame, Scioto County Career and Technical Center, Piketon and South Webster High Schools competed for the title of Small School Division Champions, while Jackson, Minford, Northwest, Portsmouth, Valley, Rock Hill, West and Wheelersburg High Schools competed for the title of Large School Division Champions.
This was a double-elimination tournament with each school playing a minimum of two matches. Each round consists of questions in the following categories: American Literature, Mathematics, World History, Fine Arts, Life Sciences, World Literature, U.S. Government, Physical Sciences, Geography and U.S. History, as well as an “Alphabet Round” (where all answers begin with the same letter of the alphabet) and a Lightning Round which consists of questions from all categories.
The Scioto County Career and Technical Center team, coached by Kristine Coriell, emerged as the Small School Division Champions, with students Josh Baker, Hayley Kline, David Hall, Emily Joyce, Cole Kidder, Jeremy Cooper, John Williams, and Brandon White. Piketon High School, under the leadership of Olivia Day, took the Small School Runner-up title, with students Jake Neal, Julia Hurst, Codie Trent, Abby Crothers, Devin Gragg, and Makenzie Moorman.
The Large School Division Championship was won by Minford High School, led by Coach Brett Oakes, and students Mikhaila Roe, Alex Powell, Morgan Thornsberry, Devon Shockley, Cody Martin, Jamie Justice, Halea King, Ethan Lawson, Leah Hammonds, Jonathan Lawrence, Oliver Rudmann. Mason Harris. The Runner-up Large School title went to Portsmouth West High School and their coach, Carolyn Callihan, and students Drake Conrad, ChrisBey, Alexis Cole, Aaron Kraft, Kenny Hawkins, Jesse Scott, and Bryan Sammons.
Moderators for the event were Angel King, Cathy Mullins, Tanner Salyers, Marcia Tackett, Dr. Darrell Rudmann, Jeremy Duncan, Chad King, and Morgan Garrett.
Scioto County Career and Technical Center and Minford High School will now advance to the Regional Competition to be held at Shawnee State University on Saturday, April 20, 2013.
