The jury may get the case of a man charged with killing a 10-month-old baby as early as Monday. The case of Brandon Wilson, 23, of 1202 Rosemount Road, takes on a different look Monday morning when the defense puts on its case, following a week of the prosecution’s case. Wilson is being tried in the death of Neylan Wilson, who died on Nov. 20, 2012 at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

During the investigation detectives learned that the baby was living with his mother and her boyfriend, Wilson, at 1112 Boren Blvd., Apt. A, in Wheelersburg and on Nov. 19 the mother, Tierra Simeona, called 911 and requested a squad for her baby. Porter Township EMS transported the child to Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth where he was later transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. That’s where the child died hours later.

During a week of testimony and presentation of evidence, the prosecution, consisting of Assistant Scioto County Prosecutor’s Pat Apel and Julie Hutchinson, called to the stand Simeona, doctors, and lead detective Jodi Conkel to attempt to construct a case that says Wilson caused the baby’s injuries and subsequent death by shaking the baby, causing it to also strike it’s head on something.

The defense team of Franklin T. Gerlach and Valarie K. Gerlach, contend the baby died from injuries suffered in one or more falls prior to it’s becoming ill.

Dr. Mary Ranee Leder MD, with 17 years of experience and practices in Pediatrics, Developmental - Behavioral Pediatrics, and Child Abuse Pediatrics, told jurors Wednesday that a fall from a shopping cart, down a set of stairs or from a couch could not have caused the injuries that claimed the life of the infant, citing the symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Gerlach contends there are other doctors who disagree with the existence of Shaken Baby Syndrome at all.

The defense presented an additional witness Friday afternoon and is scheduled to continue its case on Monday.

Judge William T. Marshall old the jury Friday morning they could begin deliberations Monday. Wilson is charged with aggravated murder, murder and child endangering.
