Imogene Gable Howland, 92


Imogene Gable Howland 92, of Portsmouth, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, passed on peacefully on the evening of Feb. 9, 2013, at the Hillview Retirement Center.


She was born Feb. 3, 1921, the daughter of the late Orville D and Mary Miller Gable.


She graduated from Portsmouth High School 1938 and graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelors of Science in Education, June 1942. She was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority and she was selected the homecoming queen. Imogene was a beacon for girls and women. Her dedicated work ranged from the President of the Girl Scouts to her creation of The Home for the Aged Women.


Originally Imogene and Dr. Louis Chaboudy co-created the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals becoming a charter member of the Board. She enjoyed a close relationship with the muralist, the board, and the historical and creative processes. She was also involved in the Southern Ohio Museum and with the Shawnee State University Development Foundation. She was generous in caring for other, her hard work for the betterment of Portsmouth, and being the “rock” of her extended family.


She was also preceded in death by her husband, Attorney William L. Howland in July of 2000, with whom she enjoyed extensive travels for pleasure and with the Ohio and American Bar Association; three brothers Carl, Richard, and Orville Gable, and two sisters, Hattie Gibbs and Helen Hartshorn.


She is survived by three children Linda Howland, Jeff Howland, and Marsea Ilio, grandchildren, Andrew Howland, Jenny Howland, Vitasimone Strauss, and Somerset Basset, great grandchildren Miles and Samuel Howland, and several nieces and nephews.


At her request there will be no services. Burial will be at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. Arrangements are under the direction of the McKinley Funeral Home, Lucasville Ohio.

Imogene enjoyed a host of close friends and relatives. She will be missed and always remembered for her kindness that she shared with us all. “How lucky we are to have somebody that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
