Girls basketball coaches throughout the state of Ohio flocked to their respective district sites Sunday to create the 2013 OHSAA girls state tournament bracket for Divisions I through IV.
In the Southeast District, action kicks off Feb. 11 with area teams in Divisions II, III and IV playing in Southeast Sectional Semifinals. No. 9 Waverly takes on No. 8 Hillsboro in a Division II contest at Zane Trace while No. 10 Portsmouth faces No. 7 West in Division III action at Valley. In Division IV, No. 7 Symmes Valley and No. 10 Trimble meet in Athens while No. 10 New Boston and No. 7 Leesburg Fairfield follows the No. 9 Whiteoak-No. 8 Green contest at Northwest.
Action resumes two days later with a Division III tripleheader. The lone contest at Valley pits No. 12 Northwest against No. 5 Minford. At Jackson, No. 2 Ironton takes on No. 15 Meigs and is followed by No. 10 Coal Grove against No. 7 Valley.
Valentine’s Day will end in heartbreak for five teams in games with local interest. With district berths on the line in Division IV, action starts at Northwest as top-seeded Notre Dame plays the winner of the Whiteoak-Green game and will be followed by No. 4 Western against No. 5 Manchester. The final game in the division has No. 4 Eastern and No. 5 South Webster at Athens.
Also in Thursday’s Division III semifinal action, No. 3 Oak Hill takes on No. 14 Chillicothe Southeastern at Jackson. Lastly, Valley will be the site of the No. 11 Piketon-No. 6 Peebles contest.
Two games Saturday will be for sectional crowns that won’t involve semifinal games for the teams involved. In Division III, No. 2 Wheelersburg will play the Portsmouth-West winner. Meanwhile, No. 6 East and No. 3 Clay face off at Northwest for a trip to Jackson and the Division IV Southeast District Semifinals.
Action will continue all the way up through the 2013 OHSAA State Tournament that takes place March 14-16 at Ohio State’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. Games involving winners will be announced throughout the tournament.
The boys tournament draw will take place this coming Sunday.
