Bertha Newman, 95


Bertha Melva Newman, 95 of Big Run Rd. Otway, Ohio died Friday Feb. 1, 2013 at the Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth, Ohio. She was born on Dec. 7, 1917, in the Otway Community to the late Melvin R. and Caroline Koenig McFarlane.


She was united in marriage on June 29, 1939, to Howard Lyle Newman who preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1998. Surviving are two sons: Dan Newman and wife Sue of Sebring, Fla., John Newman and wife Cindy of Portsmouth, sons-in-law: Jim Jones of Spring, Texas, Monte Shonkwiler of Marietta, Ga., nine grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a special niece Joan Evans of Blue Creek, Ohio. She was preceded in death by two daughters: Lorena Mae Jones, Kathleen Sue Shonkwiler, one brother, Joseph McFarlane, and three sisters: Rose Elmore, Elsie Morgan, and Edna Evans.


Mrs. Newman was the last Charter Member of the Hills Chapel Christian Union Church where she taught Sunday School for over 70 years. She also served as Secretary Treasurer of Christian Union Councel.


Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hills Chapel Christian Union Church with Pastor Jonathan King officiating. Burial will follow in the Koenig Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. at Botkin Funeral Home in Otway, and from 1-2 p.m. at the church on Wednesday.
