In 2012 the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District saw a record amount of recycling throughout Scioto and Lawrence Counties. The district hopes to keep the momentum going to 2013.

“We just finished compiling our tonnage of recycling for 2012. I thought we would be leveling off after this many years but, to my surprise and I am very happy, in 2012 our tonnage for recycling was 1,782 tons,” said Dan Palmer, Director of the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District. “In 2011 our tonnage was 1,589 so, you can see we are still having growth there.”

He said in 2010 the recycling came in at 1,376 tons.

“Each year we have been increasing and with that increase we have added another recycling container in West Portsmouth,” Palmer said. “We now have 34 sites where people can drop off recycling (spread between Scioto and Lawrence counties). There are 83 (recycling) containers spread between those sites.”

Palmer said when the district started recycling activities in November of 2006, there were 29 locations with one, eight cubic yard container at each site where people could drop materials off in both counties.

“If we did not have this program, where would all of this (items turned in for recycling) be?” Palmer said. “This is stuff that’s being recycled and turned into your plastic bottles, pop cans and a variety of things.”

Some of what is recycled is litter that is picked up by the LSSWMD.

For the litter that is left along Scioto and Lawrence County roadways, the district has two litter control crew supervisors one for Scioto County and one for Lawrence County. The supervisors are out with their crews on a daily basis working to cleanup roadways.

According to www.lsswmd.org, Jeff Crippen is the Litter Control Crew Supervisor for Scioto County. Crippen and his revolving crew are responsible for litter collection in Scioto County. The litter crew consists of himself and community service workers through the Portsmouth City Jail and Courts.

Scioto County consists of approximately 611 square miles and 900 roadway miles. Litter pickups are held on township roads, county roads, and municipal streets (Portsmouth). The crew also performs Public Community Cleanups (parks) and a minimum of three dump sites per year.

Larry Coleman is the Litter Control Crew Supervisor for Lawrence County. His responsibilities and workforce mirror Crippen’s.

Palmer said the district is joining forces with the organizers of the annual Shawnee State Park Spring Cleanup set to take place the week of March 25-30.

“Typically during that week there is a lot of litter and debris cleaned up out there,” Palmer said.
