Scioto County recorded a traffic fatality on a county road Wednesday. Monty J. Hughes, 53, of Wheelersburg, died as a result of injuries suffered in a single-car crash.

The Portsmouth Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the wreck occurred on County Road 64, known as Maple Benner Road, approximately three-tenths of a mile east of County Road 161.

Hughes was reportedly operating a 1989 Toyota Camry, and was westbound on County Road 64, when he lost control of the vehicle, went off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and slid off the left side of the roadway, striking an embankment and a utility pole. Hughes was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Lieutenant Karla Taulbee, Commander of the Portsmouth Post, said the accident remains under investigation by personnel at the Portsmouth Post.
