The start of the new year brings the release of the first Associated Press high school poll for both boys and girls basketball in the state of Ohio.
Among the noteworthy items for the Top 10 lists is the placing of the Oak Hill boys in Division III. The Oaks, which fell 52-50 to Waverly Friday night for their first loss of the season, debut at No. 7 with one first place vote. Oak Hill will welcome the last SOC II unbeaten Tuesday as Valley looks to put a two-game lead in the standings and three-game edge with head-to-head factored in to the equation.
In the same division, Ironton is on the outside looking in as the Fighting Tigers are three points away from Findlay Liberty-Benton for 10th place. Ironton entertains Gallia Academy Tuesday night.
In the girls polls, SEOAL leader Jackson is sixth with an unblemished 12-0 mark. Reedsville Eastern is 10th in Division IV girls and the Fairland girls are two points away from being in the Top 10 for Division III.
The top-ranked teams, from Division I to IV, for girls are Twinsburg, Millersburg West Holmes, Smithville and Ottoville. For the boys, it’s Columbus Northland, Dayton Thurgood Marshall, Cincinnati Summit Country Day and St. Henry.
Country Day and Twinsburg are defending state champions while West Holmes finished last season as state runner-up. Country Day defeated Portsmouth 53-37 for the Division III boys crown.
