The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Committee is set to host their annual community events beginning with the Scholarship Breakfast, which will convene Saturday, Jan. 12, at 9 a.m. at the Friends of SOMC Community Room of the Life Center in Portsmouth.

According Maureen Cadogan, the new co-chairperson of the Dr. King Scholarship Committee, the committee is still moving forward, despite the loss of their former leader and chairperson, Mrs. Genetta Moore.

Moore passed away just days before the 2012 scheduled events transpired.

Moore founded the organization in 1990, and served as the committee chairperson up until her death Jan. 8, 2012.

“She has taught us well, we are moving right along. She would be very proud,” Cadogan said.

Cadogan and her husband Tony are now serving as co-chairpersons, Christine Cave is continuing as Secretary, Mary Sanford is the new Treasurer of the committee with some assistance from former longtime Treasurer Laura Walker, and Lard Arthur who assists with the scholarship application process.

The Dr. King Committee is also composed of two representatives from various local churches.

“Advancing the Dream: The Work Isn’t Finished” is the theme the committee has chosen for 2013.

Cadogan said the theme is very timely and appropriate in light of the organization’s commitment to carry out the work that Moore started.

The Dr. King Committee is set to kick off their annual events with the Scholarship Breakfast, Jan. 12. Ticket sales for the annual breakfast is the main source of funding for the scholarships.

The annual workshops, Winter Picnic, and Performing Arts, and Gospel Concert have been postponed, until further notice, due to the Presidential Inauguration.

“We did not want to hinder people from attending the President Obama’s inauguration, so we have postponed those events for now,” Cadogan said.

Cadogan said the scholarship winners usually read their essays on at the Performing Arts Program, but will still have the opportunity to do so at the Memorial Service on Jan. 13 at Christ Temple Church.

Cave, a long time member of the Dr. King Scholarship Committee, said the community will continue the work that Moore began.

“Even with the passing of Mrs. Moore, we will continue because we know that is what she would want us to do,” Cave said.

Cave also said the committee will continue their custom of awarding four scholarships to three minority students from Portsmouth High School, and one non-minority student from Notre Dame High School in the amount of $2,000 per scholarship.
