COLUMBUS, OHIO — The trustees of the Ohio State Bar Foundation (OSBF) have established the Denny L. Ramey Education Fund to honor Denny L. Ramey, a native of Portsmouth for his service and support of the legal profession.

Ramey has served as the executive director of the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) and treasurer of the OSBF for 26 years and has been recognized by the OSBA as an innovative bar leader. Because of this, the OSBF has established the Denny L. Ramey Education Fund in his honor.

The Ohio State Bar Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity that works to advance the law and build a better justice system. Through grants and programs, OSBF educates and performs outreach to the public to make the law fair for all Ohioans.

Ramey received his BBA in management and economics from Ohio University and his MBA from Capital University. He was born and raised in Portsmouth and is a 1965 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

When asked what the establishment of the Education Fund meant to him, Ramey said, “The recognition is very special to me and a bit overwhelming.”

Ramey said that being a native of Appalachia makes the honor even more special to him.

“I am very pleased about this and I believe it is keeping in with the foundation’s goals and objectives, to benefit people living in Appalachia, particularly for people living in the Portsmouth area, because that is my hometown,” Ramey said.

Ramey said the fund is a great work and accomplishment that will transcend his service and lifespan.

“It is an honor that will be there even after I am gone, with my name being attached to the fund, and it will continue on after I don’t,” Ramey said.

Heather G. Sowald, Ohio State Bar Association Fund President, said the fund will empower students to become productive and successful.

“We hope that by giving students the tools they need to succeed, they will grow up to become leaders in their professions and communities like Denny has done,” Sowald said.

According to Sowald, Ramey has guided the OSBA and the OSBF through numerous changes and expansions. These changes have strengthened both organizations, and enabled each to better cater to the needs of Ohio’s lawyers.

Ramey credits his parents for instilling in him an appreciation for learning.

“As a kid from Portsmouth, my parents urged me to get a good education so my world would open up,” Ramey said.

To help others widen their own horizons, the Denny L. Ramey Education Fund will support projects in the Appalachian region of Ohio that further the educational purposes of the Foundation,” Ramey said.
