The Northeast Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross, which covers Greenup, Lewis, and Carter counties, has scheduled free disaster training on Dec. 6 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis County Extension office located at 284 Second St., in Vanceburg, Ky. The chapter’s executive director Vicki James said the training is for persons interested in working with Red Cross during a disaster.

“The American Red Cross relies on volunteers to help us respond to local and national disasters that occur every day. We respond 24/7 to many types of disasters including winter storms, floods, tornadoes and most often single-family fires,” James said. “We have a great need for volunteers to help us in Lewis County as well as our entire chapter service area including Boyd, Carter, Greenup and Lawrence counties.”

Volunteer positions include disaster assessment, shelter operations, mass care, disaster health and mental health services, and client casework. All volunteer training classes are offered free to the public. The training schedule will be - Disaster Services Overview - and Shelter Operations.

“We know Lewis County residents take an interest in helping their friends and neighbors in the event of a disaster,” James said. “Since the 2010 flooding in Carter, Greenup and Lewis counties, we know assistance to the victims can be initiated faster by using local residents as volunteers. Volunteers can choose to work locally, statewide and/or be deployed to national disasters.”

James said reservations are not necessary to attend the training. She said more information is available by calling 606-325-1626 or by e-mailing Vicki.james@redcross.org.
