Compass Community Health is in the process of applying for a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for funds to renovate and expand its health care center located on 11th Street in Portsmouth.

If the funding is approved it would provide for the renovation of the health care centers entrance, allow for an expansion of the waiting room to double seating capacity. Funding would allow for the construction of a new waiting room, testing lab, and new staff restroom. The estimated cost of the renovation and expansion is $86,950. Compass Community Health is asking for $60,865.

Ed Hughes, President and CEO of Compass Community Health, said work has been under way to turn The Counseling Center’s 11th Street offices over to Compass Community Health.

“We are doing this so the health care center has the entire building. We are also going this so we can bring in more providers,” Hughes said.

He said currently most of the services Compass Community Health provides is provided to drug, alcohol and mental health clients from The Counseling Center.

“We have a growing population of community folks that are accessing our services and we are working with a number of organizations throughout the community trying to alleviate access problems,” Hughes said. “We’ve been putting a lot of work into talking with others from the community on how we create better access for people to get primary care.”

He said The Counseling Center is preparing to move its outpatient programs into the Scudder School building once South Central Ohio Educational Service Center moves into the current Glenwood High School.

“We are consolidating a number of small outpatient sites. We are trying to turn the 11th Street location over to the medical center, so we need to get counselors out of there and into another location,” Hughes said. “We are hoping to be able to do business there by the second week of January. This is creating a wonderful opportunity. With this move we will have all of our outpatient counselors under one roof, we will have all of our outpatient patients coming into one location rather than being scattered.”

Hughes said there will more opportunity to provided other services to clients.

Hughes said the ARC is expected to announce its grant awards sometime in January 2013.
