POINT PLEASANT — As the years go on, it may be hard for some to believe that Roosevelt Elementary is now turning 80 years old.
In conjunction with their Fall Festival, Roosevelt Elementary will be celebrating its 80th anniversary from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the school. According to Harry Queen, President of Roosevelt Elementary PTO, any former students and staff of Roosevelt, as well as others in the community, are encouraged to attend the anniversary celebration and Fall Festival.
Originally named Franklin D. Roosevelt School, the story of Roosevelt Elementary began on Sept. 17, 1932, when the land for Roosevelt was purchased from W.O. and Eva Lemaster for $250. The school then opened its doors on Jan. 5, 1933.
Of course with any kind of anniversary celebration comes recalling old memories. Queen stated during the celebration there would be two rooms set aside for former students and staff where there would be old pictures of the school and a chance to just sit and talk and reminisce. It was also stated that Emma Kincaid, Secretary of Roosevelt PTO, has also created a bulletin board with several old pictures.
Queen continued, saying entertainment at the fall festival will include performances from the Tri-State Mountain Dulcimer Society, the Roosevelt Elementary choir, and Brittany Sayre. Queen also said there would be a silent auction of differently themed baskets prepared by Roosevelt students, as well as several items available at a “chance table.” There will also be four $100 gifts cards given away, one gift card each from Cabella’s, Speedway, Bath and Body Works, and Red Lobster/Olive Garden.
There will also be several games at the festival, including a basketball throw, a football throw, Plinko, and a cakewalk. Queen also mentioned there was a poster contest among the students and that t-shirts were also being ordered. The school kitchen will also be serving soup, beans and cornbread, pizza, hotdogs, chili, chips and cheese, and desserts.
Queen also stated the Fall Festival is Roosevelt PTO’s biggest fundraiser of the year and that all of the proceeds go directly back to the students. In addition to Queen and Kincaid serving as Roosevelt PTO officers, other officers include Vice Principal Krista Cummings, Treasurer Denise Queen, and P.R. Shawn Sergent.
