The Piketon and Wheelersburg boys cross country teams were the only area squads of either gender to advance to next Saturday’s regional meet.
The Redstreaks finished fourth in their Division II race at the University of Rio Grande. County rival Waverly was ninth.
In the second Division III boys race, the Pirates were second, finishing eight points behind winner Belpre. In the same heat, Western was fifth and Ironton was sixth.
The highest area girls team was Wheelersburg, which finished sixth in the lone Division III race. Oak Hill was seventh and Valley was 10th. The Waverly girls were eighth in its Division II event.
In girls Division II, Piketon’s Saniah Begley advanced as an individual. She was 16th.
On the boys side, the Redstreaks’ Kane Dixon was fourth and teammate Zack Varney was 12th while Minford’s Tyler Evans was ninth.
In Division III, Ironton’s Ariel Schweickart and Wheelersburg’s Lauren Bays advanced. Schweickart was 12th and Bays was 14th.
For the boys in the same division, Wheelersburg’s Brandan Adams, Brian Stiers, James Widdig and Alex Mullins were in the Top 16. They were joined locally by Western’s Syler Durst, who finished 12th.
The top four schools in each race and the top 16 individuals advance to the Divisions II and III Regional Meet at Pickerington North High School.
