PALS (Portsmouth Area Ladies, Inc.) is inviting the community to what they say will be a lively evening of fun and dancing at its “Pumpkin Party” fundraiser beginning at 8 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Elk’s City Club in Portsmouth. The dance will feature music by popular local band Doc Roc and the Remedies.

The event will also offer “finger foods” with barbecue and hors d’oeurves prepared by PALS members and a cash bar. Along with music and dancing, raffles of five gift baskets and Split the Pot will keep the entertainment going throughout the night.

PALS members are currently conducting sales of raffle tickets for the gift baskets which will continue until they are raffled during the dance. The baskets, whose values range from $250 - $400 each, contain items based upon themes which include “Go Bucks,” Ohio State paraphernalia and tickets; “Harvest Time,” a collection of home decorating items and a trip to the Festival of Lights in Wheeling, West Virginia donated partially by AAA of Southeastern Ohio; “That’s Entertainment” highlighted by tickets to a variety of local performing arts attractions and certificates; “Pamper Me,” spotlighting beauty products and services headed by an SOMC Life Center membership; and “Tee Time,” including a golf bag and other equipment, in addition to free rounds of golf at the Elks Country Club and the Shawnee State Park Golf Course.

Tickets for the Pumpkin Party may be obtained from PALS members or by contacting June McCall at 353-0466 or Carol Mascari at 574-6692. Tickets are $15 per person, and includes food and entertainment.

“This is our first attempt at sponsoring a dance,” Mascari said. “Our funds will go toward our scholarship that is through the Scioto Foundation.”

Mascari said PALS awarded their first scholarship this past spring.

“Her name was Alison Hammonds. She was a graduate of Portsmouth West High School in 2012,” Mascari said. “She is attending Shawnee State University, studying biology.”

Mascari said the criteria for becoming a scholarship recipient, is to be a female student who shows they are involved in community service.

“She (Hammonds) was active with Big Brothers and Big Sisters,” Mascari said.

Mascari said the PALS group of volunteer women plans projects each year, raising funds in order to provide grants to help many nonprofit agencies and organizations in the local community. Beneficiaries have included the Counseling Center, the Ohio River Valley Red Cross, SOMC’s Love Your Heart program, Scioto County Children’s Services, Pastoral Counseling Center, Autism Project of Scioto County, the Marsh House, Cirque d’Art Theatre, Portsmouth Public Library, more than 12 local food pantries, Cystic Fibrosis and other causes.
