Daymar College is hosting a benefit 5k run/walk for SOLACE (Surviving Our Loss And Continuing Everyday) on Saturday, Oct. 6 with registration starting at 8 a.m. with the run/walk starting at 9 a.m.
The course for the race will begin and end at Daymar College, 3879 Rhodes Ave., New Boston.
“We met with SOLACE at the beginning of the year and decided we wanted to plan an event to raise money for them. We wanted it to be towards the start of the school year. We also wanted the event to be something that would impact the community and raise awareness about the drug epidemic and the great work that SOLACE is doing,” said Allison McConnell, event organizer and Daymar College representative. “About the same time this came to fruition is the same time they opened their new office (2837 Scioto Trail), which is a former pain clinic.”
The event is called Miles for Memories, and will be used to raise awareness about drug addiction.
“Included in the event will be a memory celebration for those we have lost and the good things that are happening in the community,” said Joanna Krohn, SOLACE Director. “Through this event we hope to raise awareness and some money that will help fund some of our community projects.”
According to McConnell, the course will be outlined with red ribbons along with the names of those who have passed, due to a drug related death.
McConnell said even if people can not make it out to the race, there is going to be a celebration at Daymar College after the race that will be open to the public.
Lisa Roberts of the Portsmouth City Health Department will be at the race to talk about Project Dawn. Scioto County was chosen by the Ohio Department of Health to be Ohio’s first Community-Based Naloxone Overdose Reversal Project, the program is called Project DAWN — Deaths Avoided with Naloxone.
Registration is $10 for early registration and $12 the day of the race.
