The Civil Service Commission says the Portsmouth Police Department has scheduled an exam for police recruits. Anyone between the ages of 19 and 35 as of Nov. 10 2012. Ohio Law Section 124.42, of the Ohio Revised Code forbids the original appointment of a person as a police officer on or after the person’s thirty-fifth birthday.
All applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. Successful applicants must pass a physical examination and a polygraph examination prior to appointment.
Applications are available in the Solicitor’s Office on the second floor of the Municipal Building or online. Applications may be picked up, or they are available online at www.portsmouthoh.org. Completed applications must be received in the Solicitor’s Office on or before Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 at 2 p.m., and must be typed or printed in ink.
The written examination will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 at 8:30 a.m., at the Notre Dame Activity Center (CAY) 2310 Sunrise Ave. in Portsmouth. All applicants must report to the testing site between 8:10 and 8:20 a.m., with two pencils and one pen.
Civil Service Commission interim executive secretary Jo Ann Aeh said veterans of the armed services of the United States who are residents of the State of Ohio who qualify and receive a passing grade on the examination will receive an additional 20 percent on the examination pursuant to state law and local Civil Service Rules.
Aeh said a complete copy of Form DD-214 must be attached to the application for the examination. Failure to attach such proof of honorable discharge will result in disqualification for the veterans credit. Proof of discharge must be submitted to the Civil Service Commission prior to the deadline for applications.
