Lee Auer, band director at Valley High School in Lucasville said he and his band are excited about hosting an afternoon and evening of marching a band invitational for the Ohio Music Education Association this Saturday at the Valley athletic complex.

“They have this contest all across the state every weekend until the last week in October,” Auer said. “The goal is, if it is their first time out for the season, the bands can get some feedback from the judges and see how they can improve for the season, and end up getting a superior rating. If you get a superior rating at one of those weekend contests between now and the end of October, you are eligible to participate in the State Marching Band Finals. That usually happens the last week in October and the first weekend of November.”

Auer said 11 bands will be competing, including Green, Rock Hill, Wheelersburg, Minford, Northwest, Wellston, Gallia Academy, Coal Grove, Norwood, Newark and Hamilton.

“They’ll compete one after the other from 4 (p.m.) o’clock until about 7:15 p.m. Then we’ll present trophies at 7:30 p.m.,” Auer said. “They have been sponsored by a lot of businesses from across the county and politicians trying to get their names out, with the sponsors off-setting the cost of the trophies and to pay the judges.”

The event will begin with the Class-C (smaller schools) bands, and will end with the two Double-A (large schools) schools, Newark and Hamilton, at 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Auer said the event is a fundraiser for Valley’s band program. Admission is $5 per person, and there will be a concession stand where programs will also be available for sale.

“Times are tough everywhere, so the more money one can bring in the better,” Auer said. “It has been a lot of work, but it has been kind of a labor of love, and we have had a lot of fun. For the first time putting it together, it has been a good experience. It will make it easier come next year and hopefully for years to come. For hosting for the first time and having 11 bands, I’m extremely happy about that because I think it’s a good opportunity for Valley to show off their facilities. I personally believe it’s the best in the county if not the best in the whole area.”
